Sina Weibo once again removes candle emoticon for June 4 anniversary

candle.jpg

To prepare to the 24th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident, Sina Weibo has once again removed the candle emoticon from usage.

According to Offbeat China, the candle icon was removed on June 3, for what Sina is calling “re-organizing.”

Though some, like Wall Street Journal Chinese Editor in Chief Yuan Li have found that the candle emoticon is still available on their phones. “Seems like I can still light one on my phone. [Candle][Candle][Candle]” Tea Leaf Nation reported.

The candle is often used on Chinese social media to express sympathy for a tragic event.

Similar to last year, the term “candle” is unsearchable due to relevant regulations and policies.

This year’s censorship policies have also included giving users unhelpful results when searching for terms such as “June 4 incident”.

Still, netizens refuse to be silenced, with many finding other ways to remember those who died.

As translated by Tea Leaf Nation, journalist He Gang wrote:

I remember that year. Passion on fire. History has rolled on for two cycles [in the Chinese calendar]. That year, it happened right before my college entrance exam, and it put a lot of stress on me. One of the popular majors in Peking University ceased enrollment in the aftermath.

11/11: Shopaholic Singles!

Yes the four 1′s mean you’re all alone. “Singles Day” (guang gun jie) is an alternative to Valentine’s Day and on 11.11, people take to shopping online and has become perhaps the largest shopping day on the planet thanks to the 180 million adult singles. It’s printed in newspapers, mentioned by television programs and radio shows, advocated by millions of websites.

It is said Singles Day was begun as a joke by Chinese college students in the 1990s as China’s Anti-Valentine’s Day for people without partners.  Singles would treat each other to dinner or give gifts to woo that special someone and end their single status.

This year Singles’ day became a special day for online shopping, with discounts offered to singles. The half-price promotion created an online shopping frenzy. Money can’t buy love but for sure can buy plenty of other things!

Christmas is coming!

In Shanghai, with the end of Halloween comes Christmas. Oh yes Ladies and Gentlemen, in a country where Christmas is not even an official holiday, Santa Claus & Co completely overtake the last quarter of the year. I’ve just seen my first bit of Christmas decoration (though I’m not fully convinced the department store actually took these decorations down from last year), so I guess we should start shopping?
